ESG and Indoor Air Quality: how IAQ became a corporate sustainability KPI

From operational detail to strategic priority

For decades, indoor air quality has been considered a technical issue, dealt with by facility managers and rarely discussed at board level. Today, however, the landscape has fundamentally shifted. IAQ is now an essential of corporate sustainability across Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) frameworks. Organisations seeking credible sustainability credentials can no longer afford to treat air quality as a secondary consideration. It has become a measurable, reportable and consequential indicator of corporate responsibility.

The three pillars: environmental, social, and governance

IAQ intersects all three dimensions of ESG reporting. On the Environmental front, optimized HVAC systems reduce energy consumption. As we already reported, buildings account for approximately 40% up to 60% of energy use, with HVAC responsible for nearly half of that figure.

The Social dimension is equally important. Poor air quality directly impacts employee health, resulting in increased sick leave, reduced cognitive performance and Sick Building Syndrome. Failing to address indoor air quality (IAQ) could mean that companies are not fulfilling their duty of care to employees. On the other hand, demonstrating a commitment to healthy indoor environments can strengthen an employer’s brand and improve staff retention rates. Finally, Governance compliance is increasingly mandating IAQ documentation. Regulatory frameworks explicitly require IAQ monitoring alongside outdoor air quality measures, as set out in the European Directive 2024/2881. This directive aims to reduce air pollution to levels that are no longer considered harmful to health and natural ecosystems by 2050.

Implementing IAQ in corporate ESG strategy

A systematic approach is required to integrate IAQ into ESG frameworks. Organisations should start by taking baseline measurements, setting clear air quality targets that align with international standards and installing continuous monitoring systems. Advanced IAQ monitoring technologies provide the verifiable data necessary for transparent ESG reporting, while also enabling predictive measures to protect occupant health and reduce operational risk.

For instance, the WELL Building Standard dedicates an entire category to air quality, setting out specific performance thresholds for particulate matter, VOCs and ventilation rates. Recognising indoor air quality (IAQ) as an essential aspect of corporate sustainability is no longer optional. Indeed, it is a prerequisite for credible ESG performance and a demonstrable commitment to environmental management and social responsibility.
