Discover Remotair around the world: next stop Finland

Discover Remotair around the world: next stop Finland – where innovative HVAC monitoring technology meets the demanding Nordic climate. Hailing from the land of a thousand lakes, our partnership story showcases how advanced air quality monitoring can prevent costly system failures from impacting entire buildings.

When perfect filters aren’t enough: a Finnish case study

In Finland’s harsh climate, HVAC systems work overtime to maintain comfortable indoor environments and energy recovery is critical for the sustainability of buildings. Recently, IML – our Finnish partners – encountered a critical issue that highlights why visual filter inspection alone is insufficient. At first glance, the problem seemed invisible – the filters were clean and properly positioned in their frames. However, this case study reveals the hidden dangers in seemingly well-maintained systems.

The hidden threat: gasket failure and air leakage

Upon closer inspection using professional monitoring tools, the team discovered that deteriorating gaskets were creating invisible air bypass routes and visible light gaps between the filter frames and mounting surfaces. Fine dust had already begun to accumulate behind the filters and near the heat recovery wheels, while contaminated air was flowing directly into the rotary heat exchanger.

This bypass air carried pollen, dust and outdoor pollutants straight into the distribution system, avoiding the filtration process entirely.

The photos show exactly what happens:

  • Cracked and compressed gaskets that are no longer sealing
  • Light shining through gaps in the filter frame
  • Dust already accumulating behind the filters and near the heat recovery wheel

This kind of leakage is very common, especially in older systems or where maintenance only involves replacing filters, rather than inspecting them with a flashlight.

Why this matters in Nordic climates

In countries such as Finland, where ventilation systems operate continuously and energy recovery is crucial for sustainability, undetected air leakage can reduce indoor air quality and increase energy consumption. This can result in the premature degradation of equipment and the need for expensive emergency duct cleaning, both of which could be prevented with proper monitoring.

Remotair’s solution: predictive detection technology

Our stop in Finland demonstrates the effectiveness of Remotair’s technology in challenging environments. Our real-time camera monitoring system provides an early warning of dust bypass, preventing system-wide contamination. Strategic placement of the system at critical filtration points enables facility managers to receive immediate notifications when problems develop, preventing costly repairs by identifying issues early on.

The Nordic advantage

This Finnish case study proves the invaluable nature of predictive monitoring in climates where HVAC systems face constant operational demands. Rather than discovering contamination during annual inspections, users can receive instant alerts when filtration integrity is compromised.

Within our Remotair discoveries around the world, this stop in Finland showcases how our technology protects both indoor air quality and long-term system reliability in some of the world’s most demanding environments.
