The Macedonian climate challenge
North Macedonia’s extreme seasonal variations create perfect conditions for high demand for HVAC systems. During the winter months, around 60% of households rely on central heating systems, resulting in high energy bills that put a strain on family budgets. Meanwhile, commercial buildings dedicate 40–60% of their total energy consumption to climate control, highlighting the urgent need for smarter solutions.
The situation becomes even more complex when air quality is taken into consideration. The capital, Skopje, regularly experiences winter smog, with PM2.5 levels reaching five times the recommended limits set by the WHO. This pollution crisis is largely attributed to wood-burning heating systems, which are still used by 30% of households. This highlights why upgrading HVAC infrastructure is important not only for comfort, but also for public health.
In response to this growing interest and the urgent need for cleaner air management, Remotair has carried out a pilot project. This took place in Skopje, in collaboration with our partner – Ecotip. This initiative enables to trial our technology in the challenging climate conditions of Macedonia, while showcasing the potential for real-world energy savings and improvements in air quality to local businesses and institutions.

Industry estimates suggest steady growth in Macedonia’s HVAC market, though exact figures vary. Adoption of heat pumps and interest in solar HVAC systems are increasing, reflecting the country’s move toward green energy goals.
In 2024, the government allocated €4.1 million for a voucher program supporting inverter air conditioners to improve energy efficiency. Data for 2025 subsidies has not yet been published but expectations are that they will be higher.
